This trip is truly not for the faint-hearted. Some sailors attempt for years to reach St. Kilda before finally getting an appropriate weather window to make the crossing. Our Chief Instructor has sailed to St. Kilda many times, with various levels of crew, in a variety of ‘Scottish’ weather!
The trip will start from either Largs or Oban and is likely to return to the other harbour. All of the yachts that we use for our adventures are 42ft or larger and all boast 4 or 5 cabins – the yacht will become your home for the adventure. They are all great boats, perfect for offshore sailing, which makes even a choppy passage bearable. Our adventure sails are perfect for practising sailing skills and getting the necessary miles or night sailing hours for your logbook, which can be especially welcome for those who are aspiring for the Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster licence or even consolidating Competent Crew or Day Skipper licences.
The archipelago of islands that make up St. Kilda are simply breath-taking. Lying 60NM from the Outer Hebrides, it is simply a magical place. St. Kilda is the biggest island in the cluster with Boreray and Soy to the north and Levenish to the south. It sits proudly out of the Atlantic Ocean and its striking cliffs and sea stacks are alive with the cries of a million seabirds. However, it is not only famous for its sea birds, but also for the fact that people survived there for over 4000 years. Although now uninhabited, the main settlement was in Village Bay, and even nowadays you can still visit the houses and cemetery and get a feel for how hard life on the island was.
Sailing in Scotland can be the most challenging and rewarding in the world, with so many magical places to visit and locals to meet – and this is before we mention the Scottish fair and whisky distilleries.

a month agoI have been sailing with Go West regularly for two years now and I have done Competent Crew, Day Skipper Theory and Day Skipper Practical with them. I have also done 3 experience builders, their specialist pontoon and close quarters manoeuvres weekend and most recently a 7 day adventure sail from Largs to Oban. Next up is the VHF course. I have now sailed on 6 of their boats and with 6 of their instructors. Go West is a very well run business, with a considerable number of repeat customers. Their boats are all very well maintained and equipped and their instructors are patient, knowledgeable and polite. However, above all they are all passionate committed lifelong sailors who are keen to pass on their enthusiasm to their customers. I will definitely sail with them again.

a month agoI had an incredible week sailing along Scotland’s west coast from Largs in May 2025. We explored some stunning Scottish islands with our fantastic skipper, Danny, who made the whole trip even better. The yacht was modern, really comfortable, and a joy to sail. It was an unforgettable experience - great training, a real sense of adventure, and so much fun. I’d highly recommend it to anyone!

a week agoWe had a brilliant time completing the Day Skipper practical course with Tony, who was a fantastic instructor. He explained everything well, was patient and made sure we all had an enjoyable week sailing from Troon to Largs, Tarbert and around the Kyles of Bute. I would highly recommend Go West and Tony if you want to learn to sail!

a month agoI have just completed my first weekend of three, aboard Solway Adventurer, learning towards obtaining my day skipper qualification. The instructor was relaxed and knowledgeable. Learning points were clear and he was patient with my questions and allowed me to practice manoeuvres repeatedly when needed, not stepping in but talking me through it. Looking forward to the next two weekends
